The first and most cost-effective way to treat as taught us by our mothers is by gargling with warm water and salt. Some of us had fun tipping our head back and making gargle sounds before we spit out the salt solution.

During a sore throat episode, dry snacks such as potato chips, crackers or acidic fruits like orange or lime should be avoided.

Drinks such as smoothies and yoghurts, or fruits like bananas can be gentle on the throat at this time.

Ginger and tumeric have also been known to have anti-inflammatory properties that may help sore throats by reducing swelling and pain.
